In today's hectic world, healthy diet and lifestyle often do not make our list of top priorities, and so tends to fall by the wayside until we finally take a breath and realize that change is upon us. Perhaps we are inspired by a diagnosis or even just a tight waistband. Whatever the reason, making healthy habits more of a priority is an essential part of preventative medicine and managing current health issues.
As the newest member of the Affinity team, I wanted to introduce myself and give you a quick glimpse into the world of Holistic Nutrition. My goal within the clinic is to complement the multidisciplinary facets of Affinity and help provide a more balanced approach to wellness.
Holistic nutrition is about looking at the whole person, lifestyle and diet as preventative medicine. It is about finding the right balance for individual needs to ensure his or her future wellbeing. My training in holistic nutrition, along with the help of bio impedance analysis (BIA), a tool to help measure body fat, lean muscle and water distribution, has better equipped me to assess body composition and therefore health. This is significant, as one of the biggest issues I see in my practice is the presence of too much body fat. Current research suggests that this is one of the strongest lifestyle related factors for the development of chronic diseases, including, but not limited to, hypertension, type II diabetes and heart disease. By providing tailored dietary and lifestyle programs, based on individual needs and addressing nutritional imbalances, patients will be provided with invaluable skills to empower themselves and families through nutrition. Hippocrates said it best when he stated that “our food should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food”.
My experience in the field of holistic nutrition has taught me that even some of the smallest changes can provide life-altering transformations; I am excited to learn and grow with patients and the Affinity team.
